A Day of Dutch Master Inspiration – Student Work from Our Floral Design Class
There’s something timeless and soulful about the way light moves across a floral arrangement—especially when the inspiration comes from the works of Dutch Master painters. In our recent floral design class at Fleurs Creative, we immersed ourselves in that old-world elegance, drawing from the rich, moody, and deeply layered compositions of Rachel Ruysch.
The students were incredible. With thoughtful placement and careful consideration of color, shape, and movement, each one created a floral still life that truly captured the spirit of the Dutch Golden Age. These arrangements weren’t just flowers—they felt like rich paintings coming to life in 3D form.
We had an incredible variety of flowers to work with, including dramatic Fritillaria Persica, towering Crown Imperialis, and an irresistible assortment of tulips—fringed, parrot, and double varieties in the most sumptuous shades. Their texture and personality added drama and decadence to every design.
Ahead of class, students knew I’d be photographing their finished arrangements, so they brought their creativity and intention to each piece. I set up a styled space in the studio with grapes and blood oranges, a nod to the still-life paintings that inspired our work. The natural light streaming in through the windows enhanced every petal and shadow, creating that painterly atmosphere we all love.
Every photo in this post showcases student work, and I’m so proud to share their artistry with you. Scroll through the gallery below to experience the beauty they created—rich with depth, drama, and Dutch Master magic.
Thank you to all the students who attended and made this such a special day.

Coming Summer 2023 to Snohomish, Washington :: A Flower Market offering locally grown flowers!
We are pleased to host SCFC at Fleurs Creative for their Summer Fresh Flower Market.
I’ve asked the president of SCFC, Tracy Yang, to share with us a bit more about the new flower farmer collective.
(Alicia) Can you tell us what is the Snoco. Flower Collective?
(Tracy) The SnoCo. Flower Collective is a group for flowers growers in Snohomish, Island, and Skagit Counties. The idea is that this will serve as a platform to allow growers in these regions to connect with each other, as well as floral professionals and residents in the North Sound region.
Can you share with us what inspired you to create the SnoCo. Flower
Collective?
There are a few reasons that inspired me to create SCFC:
1) We are very blessed here in Washington to have such a vibrant local flowers scene. I thought, why don’t we use this to our advantage? It doesn’t make sense for all of us to be working super hard to be growing the same exact things. It would make more sense if we all brought something different to the table. It’s kind of like a potluck. When you go to a potluck, you’re expected to contribute one dish, not all of the dishes. It’s easier to prepare one dish instead of having to prepare everything by yourself. The same concept applies here. For example, I don’t like growing sweet peas, but another flower farmer loves to grow sweet peas and they’re great at it. That’s awesome! That’s one less thing for me to worry about. I can, then, focus my resources on growing something that I do like to grow and grow more of that. When it comes time to go to market, because I focused my resources on growing flowers I’m good at growing, the chances of product being premium quality will be higher. In the end, it’s a win-win for both the farmer and the customer.
2) Burnout is very prevalent in farmers. I think it’s important that we’re supportive of each other. Being able to learn together and confide in other people who understand your struggles makes the journey more bearable and fun.
3) I want to make local flowers accessible to more people. Local flowers are a more sustainable option than imported flowers and their beauty is just unmatched. The farm-to-table concept is becoming more popular and more people are starting to understand it. Now, I think it’s time for the farm-to-vase concept to also catch on. To increase accessibility to local flowers, SCFC will be hosting a weekly flower market starting in late Summer.
Will the flower market be open to the public or only for florists?
The SCFC Flower Market will be open to both florists and the general public. We want both floral professionals and people in the community to be able to shop the market.
When will the flower market take place?
The flower market will take place on Thursdays starting July 27th through September 29th from 7am to 11am.
The flower market will take place at Fleurs Creative located at
105 Avenue A
Snohomish, WA 98290
How can flower farmers get involved in Snoco. Flower Collective?
Flower farmers can submit an application to get involved in SCFC. Applications for both collective membership and market participation will open on April 1st. Flowers farmers can go to our website (www.snocofloco.com) and subscribe to our newsletter to receive the applications in their email when they become available.
Anything else you would like to share with the readers of Flirty Fleurs?
All growers are working hard to an amazing selection of flowers for the market this Summer and Fall. We hope to see you all there!
How can people get in touch with you, Tracy, for more information?
People can follow SCFC on Instagram (http://www.instagram.com/snocofloco) or email snocofloco@gmail.com for more information.
January of 2023 we welcomed Brenna Quan AIFD to Fleurs Creative studio and were thrilled to have her as a guest floral design instructor. Our mutual dear friend Shirley Burns of Flower Fort joined in as Brenna’s assistant and as the giggle maker for the day!
Brenna led the attendees in the creation of three artistic botanical pieces. The first piece explored movement and tension using natural & reusable materials. I found it fascinating to watch each student explore and tryout new mechanics, weaving and tension, the resulting movement in branches was fantastic.
What a terrific day at the workshop organized by @fleurs.creative with the very talented @brenna_quan and her assistant Shirley @flower_fort . We learned mechanics and put together a sturdy yet delicate structure from sticks and branches and, of course, flowered it all up...Just lovely!! Thank you to all the awesome ladies who put it together and all the participants!
Ioana Diaconu
With the workshop taking place close to Valentine’s day Brenna had the darling idea to have everyone create a heart shape out of branches and those hearts were then weaved into the large branch installation. So sweet to have a piece of each person included in the large design.
Thank you Brenna and Shirley for coming to Fleurs Creative and sharing your incredible creative spirits with all of us!
You are both the best!!
Thank you to the ladies who attended this special workshop, you were all joys to spend the day with!
Here at Fleurs Creative we think every holiday and every season should be celebrated with FLOWERS!
Always Flowers.
Fresh flowers, dried flowers, pumpkins, wreaths — all the elements that speak to the Autumn Season — we are here to appreciate the season!
October is for pumpkins and two very different classes are being offered. The first class focuses on small pumpkins(gourds) where we will attach succulents and dried flowers to the top – these are super long lasting and will easily add to your fall decor up to Thanksgiving. The second class features a carved out pumpkin that will be utilized as the vessel to hold a beautiful flower arrangement.
Both classes are great for anyone who feels creative!
